Mr. George Morton has spent over 40 years in international wholesale and investment banking in the Middle East, East Asia, North America, Europe and the UK. Born in Scotland, raised and educated in Canada, he started his career in the Foreign Service of Canada, where he spent a tour in Hong Kong at the close of the Cultural Revolution in China. Subsequently, he spent ten years in increasingly responsible managerial positions within the Canadian banking industry, in North America, Southeast Asia and the UK. He then relocated to the Middle East where he spent over 20 years based in Bahrain in senior executive capacities with prominent Arab banking institutions, where he frequently served on various local banking and regulatory advisory task forces. Upon return to the UK, he served for over six years as an independent director and Head of the Board Audit Committee of European Islamic Investment Bank plc, the first UK-incorporated and regulated sharia-compliant investment bank. For two years he was Chairman of a Middle East consultancy, founded and staffed by former members of the British Foreign Service, active in advisory services to multinational corporations and Middle Eastern governments. He has also served on boards of numerous financial institutions and companies active in the natural resource sector He holds an MA in East Asian History and Language from the University of Toronto.
